More on Alberto "Torturers 'R' Us" Gonzales

So the Eagles finally ended their NFC Championship futility and are headed to the Super Bowl for the first time in 24 years. Too bad they'll get crushed by the Patriots and their brilliant head coach —— although this does certainly put us in upset watch.

I didn't get to watch any of the games yesterday because I was here at work. Yum. Nothing I like better on a snowy Sunday then to drive over to the office and sit at my computer all day. Especially when there's football on. But at least I hung some pictures on my office wall finally.

Yes, we got snow, but only about four inches of it. At least I don't live in Boston. I haven't heard from friends there yet, but I've seen the pictures. Yikes. Screw that.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund released a statement last week (that I didn't see until today) opposing the nomination of Alberto Gonzales to be the next Attorney General:
...because of our specific concerns regarding apparent primacy of executive authority; a potential conflict of interest in the transition from Counsel to the President to Attorney General in enforcing the special counsel law; setting aside due process protections; and, uncertainty about whether inherent authority exists at the state and local level to enforce federal immigration policy, MALDEF cannot support his confirmation.
This is significant: One of the most prominent Hispanic civil rights organization is opposing the appointment of the first Hispanic to be nominated to this position. Any Democrats who fear backlash from the Hispanic community should wave this statement from the top of Capitol Hill. This has nothing to do with race or ethnicity. A vote for Gonzales is a vote for torture, plain and simple, and any Democrat —— or Republican —— who votes to affirm his confirmation should be chased out of the Congress by an angry mob of patriots who refuse to condone such morally reprehensible activities done in our name.

And I don't want to hear any hair-splitting on what constitutes "torture." This is not cheerleading camp, Rush, it's a violation of basic human rights, countless treaties to which we are a party, a violation of international and U.S. law, and a morally reprehensible enterprise. It's beating prisoners. It's using attack dogs as terror tactics. It's raping and abusing women.

I will have NO MERCY for ANYONE who votes Yea on Gonzales, because he has helped destroy America. We are no longer the standard bearer of human rights and freedom across the globe. We're more like the man who beats his wife for the first time —— no matter how you try to apologize or repudiate your actions or convince me that you're not like that, that you'll never do it again, the fact of the matter remains that you hit your wife.

This is not America. God help us all if he becomes the next Attorney General.
